Best UTV for beginners - what to rent on your first side by side trip

If you have never driven a side by side before, picking the right machine matters more than most people think. The best beginner UTV is not the most powerful one in the fleet. It is the one that gives you enough room to learn the controls, build confidence, and actually enjoy the trail without the machine working against you.

At Mountain Riders UTV Rentals, we have helped a lot of first-time riders figure out where to start. This page covers what to look for, which machines we would point you toward, and a few things worth knowing before you head out.

Ready to book your first ride?

We will help you pick the right machine when you call.

First-time renter checking age and license requirements before booking

Complete first-timers

who have never been in an off-road vehicle before and want to know what to expect and what to book.

Who still want the safety of a roll cage and harness. You'll have the passenger seat free for a small cooler or a bag.

Riders upgrading from ATVs

who know off-road terrain but have not driven a side by side with a passenger seat and harness.

Who want something more responsive. A 2-seater handles differently than a 4-seat UTV. It's quicker to turn, easier to place on a trail, and a lot more engaging to drive.

Groups with mixed experience levels

where you need a machine that is manageable for the least experienced rider in the group.

Who want something more responsive. A 2-seater handles differently than a 4-seat UTV. It's quicker to turn, easier to place on a trail, and a lot more engaging to drive.

Parents booking for a family trip

who want to know which machines are stable, comfortable, and forgiving with kids as passengers.

If you have spent real time in a side by side before and want a performance machine, see our Polaris RZR rentals guide instead.

Trip types that suit beginner riders

Not every trail or trip type is right for a first-time ride. Here is where to start.

Mixed terrain trail rides.

Moderate dirt trails with a mix of flat sections and gentle climbs. The right environment to learn throttle control and braking without surprises.

Half-day rentals.

A half-day is the right duration for a first ride. It gives you enough time to get comfortable without wearing you out. You can always book a full day on your next visit.

Family and group trail days.

The Can-Am Defender MAX and Polaris Ranger Crew are both good picks when the family or  group includes passengers who have not ridden before.

If your group is experienced and you have all driven side by sides before, skip the beginner guide and go straight to the RZR rentals guide or 4-seater page.

Recommended beginner machines from our fleet

These are the machines we recommend for first-time riders. Each one is forgiving enough to learn on while still being genuinely fun to drive.

Polaris RZR 900

Enough power to feel exciting, smooth enough to stay in control. Most new riders are comfortable within the first 20 minutes.

Maverick X3 DS Turbo

Polaris RZR 800

The easiest machine in the RZR lineup to learn on. Less HP means more forgiveness if you gas it too hard in a corner.

Maverick X3 XRS Turbo

Can-Am Defender MAX

The most beginner-friendly 4-seater we carry. Stable, comfortable, and easy to drive at a relaxed pace.

Maverick R XRS Turbo

Polaris Ranger Crew

Prioritizes a smooth, planted ride over performance. Good for beginner groups who want comfort and stability.

Maverick R XRS Turbo

The RZR XP 1000 and RZR Turbo are not recommended for first-time riders. Both are great machines, but not on a first ride. Start lower and step up on your next visit.

What a beginner machine rental costs

Beginner-friendly machines like the RZR 800 and RZR 900 are generally the most affordable options in our fleet. Pricing depends on the model, duration, and whether you are booking a weekday or weekend. For a full breakdown, see our UTV rental pricing explained page.

FAQS

For most first-time riders, the Polaris RZR 900 is the best starting point. It has enough power to be fun but handles predictably and gives you time to react. If you have never been off-road at all, the RZR 800 is even more forgiving. For groups or families, the Can-Am Defender MAX is the most approachable 4-seat option we carry.

No. You do not need prior experience to rent from us. We go over the controls with you before you head out and match you to a machine that suits your level. Just let us know when you book that it is your first time and we will take care of the rest.

Yes, on the right machine and with the right approach. Every rental includes a roll cage, five-point harness, and a helmet. We walk every renter through basic controls before they leave.

In our fleet, the Polaris RZR 800 and the Can-Am Defender MAX are the easiest to drive. Both have smooth, manageable power and a stable, forgiving chassis.

Most people feel comfortable within the first 15 to 20 minutes on a beginner-friendly machine. The controls are straightforward. The main adjustment is getting used to off-road braking and throttle control.
